CATEGORIES FOR MEETS
It was voted to allow calculators for all TEAM rounds throughout.
No calculators will be
allowed during individual rounds. The calculators allowed will
be those acceptable for SAT
exams except those that do symbolic algebra (for example, the TI89
and certain HP models).
The Team round will be twelve minutes.
Meet 1
1. Arithmetic Open
2. Algebra 1 Problem Solving (Word Problems)
3. Algebra 1 Exponents and Radicals; Equations involving
them
4. Algebra 2 Factoring; Equations involving Factoring
5. Trigonometry Angular and Linear Velocity; Right Triangle
Trigonometry
6. Team Round Open
Notes: Statistical concepts could appear in any round.
Matrix format could appear in any round.
SAT approved calculators allowed on team round only.
Please have the correct address of school, including zip code, telephone
number of school,
and the official enrollment (exact numbers, not an estimate, please)
of the total number of students
in grades 10, 11, and 12. We need these figures to determine
the breakdown for Large, Medium,
and Small Divisions. All of these should be known for the October
11th meet .
*** Please do not fail us.***
There will be post season team competition as in the past (State and
New England participation)
as well as the American Region Mathematics League Meet. Date for New
England meet at Canton
High School will be announced at a later date.
Reminder:
Please bring a complete list of students (typed or printed) who will
compete for your school this year.
Additions can be made as the year progresses. This is most helpful
in trying to decipher
your listing of students on your roster at each meet. Please
bring this with you to the first meet.
GUIDELINES FOR HOSTING A MEET:
1. Send out directions to your school to each school advisor competing
in your division.
You can do this by e-mail.
2. Make up a proctoring schedule including who corrects, scores, room assignments, etc.
3. Have some refreshments for all participants and advisors prior to the start of the meet.
4. Proctoring should be done in the following way:
All exam sheets should be placed face down on desks with practice paper
on top of it.
After this has been done, ask students to enter room. After they
have been given time to write
Name, School, and Grade on each side, tell them to begin. Give
them a two minute warning
and a fifteen second warning. When asked to stop, all students
should leave the room and the
proctor then picks up the exam sheets. The next round is conducted
in the same manner. Students
who are alternates should be handled in an entirely different area
than those who are actually competing.
5. Correcting should be done in the following way:
Work in pairs, the first corrector views the answers and puts the total
score for the student on the
back of the sheet. The second corrector checks the answers, and if
in agreement with the
score on the back of the sheet, then circles it. If there is
any disagreement on scoring by the two
correctors, they should confer and come to some agreement.
6. The scoring of the student papers onto the composite sheets should
be done by two people, one
the recorder and the other the reader.
7. The Executive Committee member should be in charge of the actual
running of the meet, once the
host advisor has done all the duties required of him/her.
RULES OF THE GREATER BOSTON MATHEMATICS LEAGUE FOR 2007 – 2008
A. Teams:
Each school sends a team of five members subject to the following restrictions:
1. There is a maximum of two seniors allowed.
2. The sum total of juniors and seniors is not to exceed four.
B. Category Participation:
1. Each team member participates in three of five categories.
If a student participates in more than three rounds then his three
lowest scores are used in determining his individual score.
2. Three team members compete in each category. If more than
three
compete then the three lowest scores are used for the team score.
C. Contest Procedures:
1. The host school advisor assigns the tasks (proctoring, correcting,
checking, and scoring)
to specific schools. The host school advisor should designate
someone to check the team lineups to
avoid having a team with too many seniors etc.
2. The scorer should be given a score sheet by each team’s coach on
which the correctly spelled
COMPLETE NAMES as well as grades are included. The coaches may
keep the second score for their own use.
3. Each coach is responsible for making sure his students know the
following rules:
a. There is ten minutes allowed per category. A two minute warning
and a fifteen second warning
will be given by the proctor. Drop everything when the proctor
calls time.
b. Complete names, grades, and schools must be on every paper.
They may be put on the back of
the paper before starting time. No other writing (such as formulas)
may be put on the paper before the
starting time before a particular category is announced.
c. Answers must be placed on designated lines for credit.
d. When necessary, units will be specified in the answer column and
the student must use the units there
to receive credit.
e. Answers must be legible.
4. If any questions arise as to the acceptability of an answer, poll
the advisors present, act
accordingly in scoring and send comments to the board along with all
the papers.
5. When marking papers, put no marks on top of student’s answers.
The board has to be able
to read the student’s answers when they are checking the papers.
6. Keep running totals available as the contest progresses.
7. The committee should receive all contest papers, scorer’s score sheets
and list of the top scorers
no later than the day after the contest is given. Extra copies
of the contest need not be returned to the committee.
D. Scoring
1. The first question receives one point, the second question two points,
and the third question
three points, unless otherwise specified.
2. The individual’s yearly score is the sum of his best four out of
five meet scores.
3. The team scores consist of the sum of the scores of the five meets.
Member schools during the year 1971 to 1972 are charter members of the
GBML. Any school wishing
membership must submit a formal application to the executive board
by June 1 of the preceding year.
Any member who withdraws is subject to a re-entrance fee.
All schools will be responsible for submitting meaningful questions
with complete solutions in designated
categories which will be determined by the executive board.
All contests will absolutely begin no later than 3:30 p.m., but should be started prior to that time (preferably 3:00 p.m.).
Schools must notify the hosting school if they expect to be late.
SNOW POLICY: If several schools have no school in a division, then the
meet will be postponed
until the following Wednesday. If a team is uncertain about a
postponement, then he should call the host school.
The hosting will be done on a rotating basis.
DIRECTIONS FOR SUBMITTING QUESTIONS
1. Use 3 x 5 file cards
2. Month, category, and year on each card
3. Name of school on each card
4. Question on one side of card
5. Complete solution on other side – i.e. SHOW WORK
6. For each category assigned, please submit TWO QUESTIONS – label
cards: EASY, MEDIUM, HARD.
7. Word questions so units are not required in the answers
8. Please send these questions to:
